I have recently seen an increased interest in ultrasound assisted liposuction. There are many prospective patients who are opting for more advanced forms of liposuction which include tumescent liposuction and the use of liposuction ultrasound. Anyone  considering having one of these procedures wants to get as much information beforehand as possible you should always be sure to ask the physician what specific methods he or she will be using and do your homework so that you can understand the risks.

Liposuction ultrasound  as ultrasound assisted liposuction is also called is an advanced procedure used by surgeons to assist them in removing formerly resistant body fat especially in the case of men more efficiently and effectively. Body shaping procedures like tumescent liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction are as much an art as a science. They require to my way of thinking a surgeon who is able to communicate his thoughts on how he or she will  create his work of art on the canvas, your body that he will be working with.

By using the a variety of tools afforded him tool to assist in breaking up the fat cells the surgeon can remove more fat, more easily. Ultrasonic liposuction works by using the energy of ultrasonic waves to break up fat cells in certain areas and converting these unwanted fats a thinner version of itself more oil if you will and thus this less viscous. The areas involved are usually the flanks, back, hips, upper abdomen and areas where you may have had previous episode of liposuction before. These areas have proven to be somewhat more complicated than others.

.As with traditional liposuction a  suctioning or vacuuming device is involved but this one is specifically designed to be used in conjunction with ultrasonic liposuction. The fatty areas are better identified by injecting them with tumescent fluids which contain a local anesthetic usually lidocaine and vasoconstrictor usually epinephrine. Then, a micro-canula with an ultrasonic probe is attached to a generator and relatively powerful suction device. As the micro-canula passes through the fat, the energy breaks down fat cells and converts them to oil. This oil will then blend with the tumescent fluids to form a mixture that can be easily sucked out through the canula.

Ultrasonic liposuction is not  to be thought of as a replacement for traditional liposuction which is in fact giving way to tumescent liposuction as the procedure of choice for  surgical fat removal. It is generally speaking to be used in adjunct with other fat removal procedures when deemed necessary by the surgeon because it can be useful to more easily remove fat that may have been difficult to remove using traditional liposuction or tumescent liposuction.

Your doctor will of course know better than anyone the advisability of the use of liposuction ultrasound. When I had to access options for my own procedure I was glad that my doctor was  not a fan at least not yet. The employment of ultrasound is too new I concluded and so many of the long term risks are not yet known that it is something I would not consider.

There have been several issues to arise in the use of ultrasonic liposuction that do and should cause many a surgeon and patient to pause in implementing it’s use. There are early indications of a relationship between  ultrasound and damage to the peripheral nerves. This is particularly of concern when the procedure will involve sensitive areas like the face and neck where even minor nerve damage could be devastating. The heat of the energy produced by the ultrasound is hard to regulate has the potential to burn as well as cause blood clots to form. All in all with the use of liposuction ultrasound there is definitely a far greater risk of unintended consequences than I believe  patients should be willing to expose themselves to in a cosmetic procedure.

Ok so we have more risks, higher costs and only short term use on which to base a decision. On the other hand it does allow fat removal that could not be done heretofore . This is true in particular for men whose fat is of a different nature than the fat of women and it is men who are likely to undergo fat removal surgery using liposuction ultrasound. Ultimately you and your surgeon will have to decide on this important medical matter. As always there is no medical advice to be found in the pages of this website. For me ultrasound assisted liposuction is an idea whose time and refinement have yet to come.
